This diagram to your left shows\u00a0these arteries. Many\u00a0conditions can affect the\u00a0walls of these arteries\u00a0and cause the arteries to\u00a0narrow or obstruct. This\u00a0is peripheral arterial disease. Common conditions that increase a person&#8217;s risk of peripheral\u00a0arterial disease are\u00a0smoking, advanced age,\u00a0diabetes mellitus, hyper- tension, hypercholesterolemia and male sex.\u00a0Other \u00a0situations or conditions include a family\u00a0history of PAD, being\u00a0overweight, an inactive\u00a0life style, and past history of stroke or heart attack.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What problems can PAD cause?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It depends on the area of the body PAD affects.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>PAD of the large arteries in the neck can cause\u00a0stroke.<\/li>\n<li>PAD of the kidney arteries cause hypertension\u00a0and may lead to kidney failure.<\/li>\n<li>PAD of the arteries that supply the intestines can\u00a0cause pain after meals, malabsorption, and\u00a0weight loss.<\/li>\n<li>PAD of the arteries that supply the legs and feet can\u00a0cause pain when walking as well as foot ulcers and gangrene when extreme. There are tests\u00a0that will confirm or dismiss the disease in you, and if\u00a0proven to have it, you will be referred to healthcare\u00a0specialists to help you.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is there treatment for PAD?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, there is treatment for PAD. It starts with prevention: stopping smoking, better control of the blood sugar, cholesterol, and hypertension with medication reduce the risk of developing PAD and slow down its progression.
